
What is Trichomoniasis?
About 70% of individuals with trichomoniasis do not have any signs or symptoms. Trichomoniasis also known as “Trich” is a sexual transmitted disease that is caused by a parasite. Symptoms often occur within 5 to 28 days after being infected.
Causes
This infection can spread through sexual intercourse and is commonly found in the lower genital tract area among women. This includes the cervix, vagina, vulva, and urethra. It cannot spread through casual contact such as hugging, coughing, sneezing, sitting on toilets, kissing, etc.
Symptoms
Symptoms in women are:
- Clear, whitem, greenish, or yellowish vaginal discharge (thin discharge or increase volume) along with a fishy odor
- Itching
- Buring
- Redness
- Soreness
- Pain with urination or sex
- Discomfort over the lower stomach
Treatment and Prevention
Trichomoniasis can be treated with antibiotics which are Tinidazole and Metronidazole. Prevention of trichomoniasis includes:
- Regular testing
- Using condoms
- Limiting amount of sexual partners
