Vaginal Dryness: What Is it?
Vaginal dryness can occur due to many reasons, but one of the most common causes of vaginal dryness is perimenopause.
The decreased estrogen during perimenopause can cause the vaginal and vulvar tissues to become thinner and drier, this is called vulvovaginal atrophy. During this time, vaginal secretions decrease and there is decreased natural lubrication of the vagina.
Painful intercourse can occur due to vaginal dryness. In addition, the lack of natural lubrication and the thinning of tissues makes women during this time more prone to urinary tract infections and increased urinary frequency.
Treatments for Vaginal Dryness
- Vaginal moisturizers – helps moisturize the tissues
- Vaginal lubricants – helps reduce pain with sex
- Estrogen cream applied to the vagina – helps promote the vaginal tissues
- Prescription oral medications – hormonal treatments that can help with vaginal atrophy
As always, talk to your doctor if you’re experiencing this symptom.
